If you’ve ever looked into skincare routines, you’ve probably come across the famous Korean skincare system. The Korean skincare routine is not just a set of steps, but a complete philosophy for taking care of and pampering our skin. While it might seem complicated at first, the truth is that it is a very effective way to keep our skin healthy, radiant, and well-hydrated. I’ve personally adopted some of its steps, and I can tell you that I’ve noticed a big difference! Although some versions of the Korean skincare routine include up to 12 steps, the most common version has 10 steps, and if you follow them consistently, you’ll see the magic on your skin. Let’s go over them carefully.

What is the Korean skincare routine?

The Korean skincare routine, also known as "K-beauty," is a holistic approach to taking care of our skin. Unlike traditional routines in the West, which tend to focus on products that treat specific skin problems, the Korean routine focuses on keeping the skin clean, hydrated, and balanced, so it can remain in its best state. And for that, there are no shortcuts. It’s a routine that takes its time, but I promise you, the results are worth it!

1. Double cleansing
(oil-based and foam cleansing)

We start with one of the most essential points of the Korean routine: cleansing. There are no shortcuts here. Double cleansing is key to removing not only makeup but also impurities and excess sebum. The first step is to use an oil-based cleanser, which removes oil-based products like waterproof makeup. The next step is to use a water-based cleanser, which will remove sweat, dust, and other impurities from the skin. This way, we achieve a deep and thorough cleansing.

2. Toner

In the Korean routine, the toner isn’t just for balancing the skin’s pH, as in other routines. In K-beauty, the toner also prepares the skin for the following steps, so that the subsequent products are better absorbed. Additionally, you can choose one that suits your skin’s needs, whether it’s moisturizing, soothing, or has astringent properties.

3. Essence

Essence is one of the most distinctive products in the Korean routine. It can be compared to a serum or a toner, but it has a lighter texture and focuses on deeply hydrating the skin while preparing it for the following treatments. The essence can offer various benefits: improving skin elasticity, brightening the complexion, or even treating skin texture.

4. Serum or Ampoules

This is where you can really personalize your routine. Serums and ampoules tend to have a higher concentration of active ingredients and are ideal for addressing specific skin concerns, such as dark spots, wrinkles, enlarged pores, or dehydration. You just need to choose the one that best suits your needs and apply it after the essence. Remember, less is more—there’s no need to overwhelm your skin with too many products.

5. Mask

Korean masks are famous for their amazing benefits. There are all kinds: clay masks, sheet masks, hydrating masks, anti-wrinkle masks, soothing masks... the variety is endless! They don’t need to be used every day, but they’re a great way to give your skin an extra boost, especially during stressful times or when you need to look particularly radiant. Sheet masks, for example, are super easy to use, and you can find many formulas depending on what your skin needs.

6. Eye Cream

The area around the eyes is one of the most delicate parts of the face, so it requires special care. Eye creams have lightweight yet very nourishing formulas designed to combat dark circles, puffiness, and fine lines. In this part of the Korean routine, it’s recommended to apply the cream with gentle tapping motions to avoid pulling on the thin and sensitive skin.

7. Moisturizer

Hydration is essential, and in the Korean routine, it’s never overlooked. The goal here is to provide deep hydration that helps the skin maintain its balance. There are many types of moisturizers, ranging from lighter ones for oily skin to denser ones for dry skin. The trick is to choose the one that best suits your skin type and apply it generously.

8. Sunscreen

You can’t talk about a complete routine without mentioning sunscreen. In Korea, this step is absolutely sacred, and rightfully so: the sun is one of the main factors that accelerates skin aging. Sunscreen is not an optional product; it’s a must. Apply it every morning, even if you don’t plan on being outside all day. And don’t forget to reapply it throughout the day if you’re exposed to the sun for several hours.

9. Overnight Masks

Overnight masks, applied before bed and left on overnight, are another step many Koreans include in their routine. These masks provide intense hydration while you sleep and can help improve skin texture with continued use.

10. Oil or Balm

For drier skin or when extra nourishment is needed, some people include a nourishing oil or balm in their nighttime routine. These products create a protective layer on the skin that helps seal in all the hydration we’ve applied previously, keeping the skin soft and nourished throughout the night.

Additional Tipsfor your Korean Skincare Routine

1. Listen to your skin: Your skin won’t be the same every day. Listen to it, adapt to its needs, and adjust your routine based on the changes you notice.

2. Consistency is key: Like any skincare routine, the key lies in consistency. Results won’t appear overnight, but with patience and dedication, your skin will thank you.

3. Take your time: The Korean skincare routine is not a sprint; it’s a marathon. Take your time to enjoy the process. It’s a moment to relax, take care of yourself, and feel good.

4. Exfoliate in moderation: While exfoliation is important to remove dead skin cells, you shouldn’t overdo it. Once or twice a week is more than enough to avoid irritation.

5. Choose the right products: Not all K-beauty products are suitable for every skin type. Do a little research on the ingredients and find those that best suit your needs.

Adopting the Korean skincare routine is much more than just applying a bunch of products to your face. It’s about giving your skin the love and attention it deserves, and enjoying a moment of self-care each day. With patience and consistency, you’ll see your skin transform into a more radiant, hydrated, and healthy complexion. So, why not start today?
